Josh, I Don't Think We're In The Singles Ward Anymore
My goal with the post title was to make it sound like The Wizard of Oz. So, just in case you didn't get that the first time you read it, now you will.
We were in our new ward yesterday and were listening to the recently returned missionary speak when all of the sudden... ten babies started crying. Okay, so maybe there weren't ten babies. But there were definitely more than two or three. I glanced over to Josh and said, "We're definitely not in the Singles Ward anymore."
Once I was in Relief Society, the Young Women came in to join us for opening exercises. The Laurels President got up and said, "Please stand". All of the sudden, memories from my days in Young Women's came flooding back to me. Luckily, the Young Women Theme did, too. I realized as I was reciting it that it had been almost four years since I had been saying this theme regularly. It made me nostalgic to think about the fun mutual activities and all of my inspiring leaders and teachers I had during my time as a Young Woman.
The next week we were introduced as the "new family" in the ward. We happened to both be completely matching in our black and blue Sunday attire - even our socks/nylons and shoes matched. How cute, right!? We stood up and smiled awkwardly from the second row, waiting until we could sit back down. Afterwards, a few members of the ward came to introduce themselves. I'd be lying if I told you I remembered any of their names... but they all seem so nice and friendly.
Josh introduced himself in Elders Quorum and the bishop said, "We have a real life celebrity in our midst, brethren!" We're still not quite sure what this meant, but hey, I'll take it... I'm married to a celebrity!!
Sister Sarah Lee was sitting next to me in relief society. She had introduced herself when Josh and I visited the ward back in August before we got married (the only reason I can remember her name is because I used to have a student named Sarah Lee from Westlake) and she is the sweetest mother to her seven or eight kids (I can't remember exactly how many. All I remember is sitting next to her on the couch one Sunday and seeing all of these children run up to her saying, "Mom!").
I sat back down by Sister Lee after giving the opening prayer. Sister Ray (a member in the relief society presidency) got up to introduce the speaker and said, "My kids keep wondering. Are you the new band teachers wife?" I laughed and said, "Yes, I'm the new band teachers wife." To which she replied, "Ah, okay. Word is getting around." We also still aren't sure what that means. But it should be good if I'm married to a celebrity, right?!
We probably could have fit everyone in the congregation on the first four rows, but Sister Foster (our next door neighbor) assured me that our ward was much, much larger. So far the ward seems to either have very young couples with young children or older couples with children who are moved out.
We're enjoying the ward so far and are looking forward to receiving callings. Josh and I both signed each other up for Ward Choir while we were in the last block of church - that was a comical conversation on the way back to our little basement apartment. But we are definitely excited to keep getting to know people and participate in ward activities.
Side note: Who's excited for General Conference!? I know I can't wait!!
