Maple Mountain
Josh has been busy working with the Maple Mountain marching band the past few months and last night his work really started to shine. It's been such a joy for me to be able to interact with his students and see him working so hard to meet his hopes & dreams. Ever since I've known Josh, he's always had more on his plate than your average Joe. Josh will jump at any opportunity he can to improve his musical abilities and leadership skills. Some people (*cough* *cough*... me....) wish he'd come home early every once and a while, but I couldn't be more proud of him and path that he's on. There is not a single doubt in my mind that he will be a successful band director, husband, father, and human being.
Last night I told Josh that I missed him because the two of us have just been so busy. It seems like we wake up early to get ready for the day and then once we're getting home, it's already time for bed. I keep wondering how we ever were able to spend so much time with each other while we were dating. I'm beginning to have jealousy towards all his Maple Mountain students -- they get to see Josh WAY more than I do! Those lucky ducks...
This morning I woke up and started to get ready for a long (really long) day of work. Josh had gone to Maple Mountain early to get some things done before classes started for the day and I scrambled to curl my hair and look presentable so that I could leave on time to drive the 35 minutes to get to my job. I opened the fridge to see a blue sticky note on my yogurt that I take every morning to eat for breakfast. Despite feeling frantic about the stressful day ahead of me, it was nice to be reminded that I have someone who loves me that I get to come home to every single day.
Even through his difficult days, Josh is always sure to check in on me. He asks how my day went and listens to me gab about work and the people that are there. He holds my hand while we talk and genuinely listens about my boring, mundane day. Every morning he sits down on the bed and gives me a hug & a kiss before he leaves for the day. He's one of the busiest people I know, yet he somehow always makes time for me - whether that's by supporting me in my photography by holding up a reflector light for hours, snuggling with me while we watch a movie, or writing me a sweet note and sticking it on my yogurt so that I'll see it in the morning.
Every time I think I couldn't possibly love him more than I do right now, I'm quickly proved wrong. Josh is the perfect example of all that is selfless, loving, genuine, and kind. It means the world to me that he makes time to be with me even with his busy, crazy, stressful schedule. I love knowing that he is invested in our marriage and am ready to tackle anything with him that may come our way.
Last night was Josh's first Family Night show for his marching band. The students rehearsed after school and then their parents began to show up around 7:00PM. They filled the middle section of the bleachers at Maple Mountain high school and cheered their kids on from there. It was so much fun to see the excitement in the kids' eyes as they got to perform for their loved ones. Their show this year is called, "Under Construction". They have bright orange construction cones that frame their field and blueprint flags for the color guard. I remember a few months ago listening to dozens of marching band show scores and giving Josh my opinion. One of the ideas he shared with me was a baseball show. I shot that one down real fast. He really couldn't have picked a better show for his first year teaching! The kids have really responded to it and are loving Josh. It's so inspiring to watch teenagers fuel something that they love and are passionate about.
Once all the parents and students had gone home, Josh and I lied down on the football field. I thought, "Holy cow. This is life now." We're going to be busy, busy bees for the rest of our lives. But I couldn't be more excited!! I know it won't be the easiest -- especially because when I've had a long day of work I just want to go home and fall asleep for six months and not think about life. But I'm grateful that I have a reason to help get me through every single day - something that I get to look forward to seeing and being with for the rest of forever.
Josh's band begins competition season this Saturday at Orem High School for the Orem Showcase. It isn't a scored competition, but his students go and perform for judges and receive a free clinic before they will be judged and scored the following week. We're hoping that our band will be able to place this season! Josh has been working really hard to create an environment for these kids that will leave a lasting and changing impression on their lives. He has begun to cultivate a culture of learning, growth, and dedication. I have no doubt that this little band and their director from Spanish Fork, Utah will be inspiring people in the next few years. Go Maple Mountain!

Josh is also a member of the Utah Wind Symphony and started rehearsals for the new season last night in South Jordan (which is a pretty far drive from our apartment in Mapleton). I love seeing the drive, devotion, and passion he has for music. We're excited for the upcoming concert in October - it's going to be SPECTACULAR!
